Where to start.....
As a teacher, you face all kinds of interesting things in the classroom from silly questions to wonder of how you accomplished a task. My life as a teacher has been probably more interesting than others. So, here is my story....
I went to Henderson State University after graduating from DeWitt High School in a class of 93 students. How do I remember that it was 93? Well, back then, they took the top 10% as honor graduates and they do not round up for anything! So, guess who was #10 in the class. Yep, ME! I tried to get them to round up. I even remember asking them to count the number of students again. In hopes that they would find that there was 96 students and not 93.
I graduated in December 1996 from Henderson State with a Bachelor's of Education in Business Education. At the time, my husband and I had been married four years and we had a little girl. The night I graduated, I felt sick and nauseous. I was too excited to worry about it. The next day, the feeling came back...and well, we ended up with Shelby 9 months later.
During the Spring of 1997, I taught Earth Science at a Junior High School. Business Teacher teaching Earth Science is not the best of situations, but it was a job with a pay check. The assistant principal was my former teacher from DeWitt. He kept telling me I looked like one of the kids. He would ease drop in on my classroom and get on to kids when he recognized their voices. It was not the ideal situation and I truly questioned my career choice.
My middle daughter came along in September. In November, a job came open in the Hot Springs School District. This was a teaching position for grades 6-12. I taught all subjects. What was interesting....I was the teacher working for the school district, and my husband was their therapist working for the community mental health center. Students in this school suffered from mental problems and needed a teacher who understood their situation.
The next summer, a position came open for a business teacher in DeWitt. My business teacher from high school was wanting to transfer to Stuttgart to be closer to her family. She needed to find a replacement in order to get out of her contract. I interviewed for the job on a Wednesday. The job was offered to me on a Friday. The next week, we moved and school started two weeks from when I was hired. That is just the way things happen around here.
We lived in DeWitt for 22 years. I absolutely LOVED my job! I had worked with a great staff. I had great friends. All three of my daughters graduated from there. It was the perfect town to raise our daughters because everyone knew each other. That can be a curse because everyone knows your business, but it had its Pros because, if one of my kids acted up, I knew quickly!
After our youngest graduated, my husband was ready to make a move. All these years, he lived in DeWitt for us and made sacrifices of being away from his family. So, I agreed to start looking for a job. Within a few weeks, I was offered a job at a High School. What should have been a year of empty nest and just living, ended up being a year of us changing our life completely from the ground up!
And that brings us to where we are today....There have been challenges all through the years. And we have always made the best of the situation. My blog is going to be about those challenges and how we are surviving living with our parents, building a house, welcoming a new grand baby during a pandemic, and just your normal crazy life moments!
I want to dedicate this part of my blog to all my former students out there!
